The New York Rangers are expected to make a big splash in free agency.
One player who could be traded is defenseman Nicklas Backstrom, who is expected to sign a one-year, $2.25 million contract with the Washington Capitals.
That’s a $2 million deal for a player who has appeared in just two games for the Rangers this season.
The Rangers also could receive some draft picks in return.
Backstrom is a big body with a lot of offensive upside.
He’s currently the sixth-ranked defenseman in the NHL and ranked in the top-10 for goals against average and shots against average in each of the last three seasons.
The 24-year-old has eight goals and 16 points in 24 games this season, but he has had a career-high five goals and 10 points in 33 games in 2015-16.
Backholm also has four goals and 11 points in 31 games in his career.
The 6-foot-3, 214-pound defenseman was drafted by the Rangers in the third round (166th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft.
